World Conference on Exercise Medicine

The Body Society team attended the 3rd World Conference on Exercise Medicine. in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 16-18 August 2019. The purpose was to spread awareness of the various Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and share ways on the prevention and management of these diseases.

Over 700 participants from 36 nations came together with one common goal; to save people suffering from NCDs. This year, the focus was on practical applications with exercise leaders and experts from various disciplines including dancing, tai-chi, aerobics, capoeira, strength and conditioning, core training, yoga. The discussion was around how we engage people the right way and encourage the public to lead an active lifestyle.

While Singapore tops the global life expectancy at 84.8 years, research shows that most people will spend the last decade suffering from various NCDs. The most common among Singaporeans are Hypertension, Diabetes, and High Cholesterol and caused by obesity, smoking, bad diet and inactivety.

Research shows that the fitness industry skyrocketed over the last 10 years with 600 million active participants worldwide. Here there is at least one fitness centre in a 3km radius so access is definitely no excuse. So I asked myself, why are we still facing these problems?

Only 66% of Singaporeans are active but of that number, only one in five is hitting the physical requirement of healthy living. The other 40% that are active are barely meeting the minimum requirement. This is shocking!

All of us go through physical education from kindergarten all the way to secondary school but somehow over the years we get side-track and put all of our focus on careers and family while neglecting our own health.

My advice is, take ownership and invest in yourself – now – before it is too late – and adopt an active lifestyle.

Prevention is better than cure. The resources are out there. You can’t perform well if you don’t have good health. Vigorous physical exercise increases your lifespan by 2-4 years and improves your quality of life.

In the next few weeks, I will be sharing in detail how we can combat these diseases so stay tuned to our weekly updates! For now, take the first step in becoming a stronger version of yourself!

Book a session with us and enjoy a private space for your first step to fitness!
